Green and Irish Potatoes

The Owls started their morning off in Spanish Class with Alicia. Continuing with our flower study, Alicia taught friends how to say the different parts of a flower in Spanish. Ask your Owl if they remember how to say flower.

After Spanish friends headed back to their classroom where there was a special visitor waiting. It was Danielle's Mom, MaryAnne! MaryAnne came in to help Danielle tell friends about their St. Patrick's Day Tradition.  MaryAnne told friends that her Great Grandparents were born in Ireland, which is why she celebrates her heritage. MaryAnne explained that once upon a time in Ireland, there was a big problem! There was a famine and the only thing that they were able to grow were potatoes. MaryAnne went on to explain that because of the famine, people make Irish Potatoes as reminder of the hard times and that you should be grateful for the food that you have and not to waste it. While growing up and during the week of St. Patrick's Day, MaryAnne would get together with her parents, 7 sisters and 2 brothers to make Irish Potatoes. When Danielle and her sisters were born, she continued the tradition with them. Each year, her mom and sisters get together for a few hours and listen to Irish music, make Irish potatoes and share memories and stories. After all the potatoes are made, they would deliver them to our friends and families to enjoy.

After hearing about their tradition, friends headed to off to make their own Irish Potatoes. The Owls were very excited to learn that the potatoes they were making were going to be sweet and not savory. First, friends mixed 10x sugar, Cream Cheese, melted butter, vanilla and milk into a large bowl and mixed it until it became a dough texture. Next, friends separated the dough and rolled it into small balls. Lastly, friends rolled the small dough balls in cinnamon. Finally, the Owls were able to taste their delicious treats! Some friends noticed that our candy potato looked like a real potato but it tasted much better! After we tasted our treat, friends headed off around school to spread the cheer and deliver our Irish Potatoes, just like Danielle and her Mom do every year!
