Flower Facts

The Owls had two very special visitors this morning, John Henry's dad and grandfather. They came in to share some interesting facts about Flowers. We began our discussion by talking about a flower's qualities and what it needs to grow. Flowers need soil, air, water, and sunshine.

Friends learned why flowers may be a certain color, size, and have a particular scent. We learned that this is to help attract specific bugs and insects. Some flowers smell really bad, like rotting meat. The Owls really enjoyed this fact and found it to be hilarious!

Next, we moved onto to pollen and pollinators. Pollinators, such as bugs and insects, move pollen from one flower to another to help grow more flowers, as well as fruits and/or seeds.

The Owls took turns touching and smelling a Gerbera Daisy. Friends thought the petals were soft and that it had a sweet scent.

We had the chance to look at pictures of flowers that look like animals! We saw a flower that looks like a bird, one like a bee, and one like a monkey.

John Henry's dad told us that if he could have a flower of his own it would include all of the things he loved. He showed us a picture of his creation, which included a bicycle wheel, pizza slices for petals, and spatulas for leaves. This inspired the Owls to create their own flowers!

Ask your Owl if they could create their own flower what it would look like!

The Owls LOVED having John Henry's dad and grandfather visit! We learned so many interesting facts. Also, they were kind enough to bring in enough flowers for us each to take one home!
