Flower Facts

The Owls had two very special visitors this morning, John Henry's dad and grandfather. They came in to share some interesting facts about Flowers. We began our discussion by talking about a flower's qualities and what it needs to grow. Flowers need soil, air, water, and sunshine.

Friends learned why flowers may be a certain color, size, and have a particular scent. We learned that this is to help attract specific bugs and insects. Some flowers smell really bad, like rotting meat. The Owls really enjoyed this fact and found it to be hilarious!

Next, we moved onto to pollen and pollinators. Pollinators, such as bugs and insects, move pollen from one flower to another to help grow more flowers, as well as fruits and/or seeds.

The Owls took turns touching and smelling a Gerbera Daisy. Friends thought the petals were soft and that it had a sweet scent.

We had the chance to look at pictures of flowers that look like animals! We saw a flower that looks like a bird, one like a bee, and one like a monkey.

John Henry's dad told us that if he could have a flower of his own it would include all of the things he loved. He showed us a picture of his creation, which included a bicycle wheel, pizza slices for petals, and spatulas for leaves. This inspired the Owls to create their own flowers!

Ask your Owl if they could create their own flower what it would look like!

The Owls LOVED having John Henry's dad and grandfather visit! We learned so many interesting facts. Also, they were kind enough to bring in enough flowers for us each to take one home!

Flowers, Yoga and Alicia!

The Owls began their morning off with Choice Time. Friends were able to choose between making beautiful flower arrangements, building luxurious magnatile buildings, painting and drawing flowers and gardening tools to finish up our back wall and books.

After Choice Time the Owls had a special visitor, Courtney, Lily's mom. Courtney came in to have a yoga class with friends. Courtney began yoga class by explaining to friends what yoga means. Ask your Owl if they remember what three areas of your body yoga focuses on.

Next, Courtney introduced us to a book that she wrote that included different yoga positions as well as two friendly characters. The two main characters are the Catbirds' Guinea Pigs, Popcorn and Princess Froggy. Legend has it that at night, when all the friends leave school, Popcorn and Princess Froggy go on exciting adventures. Before reading the story, Courtney taught friends 6 different yoga positions that they will hear about in the book, and when they do hear the position, they have to "leap" into position. Friends learned Sukhasana, Guinea Pig, Frog, Turtle, Mountain and Tree. See if your Owl can recreate and teach you the different positions they learned.

The Owls did a such an "OWL-tastic" job following along and positioning our bodies along with the story that Courtney will be coming back the next couple Tuesdays to work with us and build on our yoga skills. Friends can not wait to see what positions we will be learning next and the characters that go along with them.

After Yoga friends headed off to Spanish class with Alicia. Today the Owls traveled to Ecuador where they continued to learn how to pronounce the different parts of a flower  and the different modes of transportation in Spanish. Ask your Owl if they remember how we traveled to Ecuador.

Friends wrapped up their morning by heading outside to enjoy thy beautiful weather!
