Raku!

Today we had our Raku firing. A little while back, the Owls had the chance to work with the 4th graders to create owl sculptures. To continue with that process, the 4th graders helped us fire our Raku owls today. After Meeting for Worship, we headed outside to the space behind the cafeteria. There, we met Amanda, 4th grade, and all the other helping hands that went into making this day such a success!

Before the Raku firing, friends went over the step-by-step process and safety rules.

The Owls did not physically move their ceramic pieces, but were still present to lend their support. While we watched from a distance, we helped by tearing newspaper to place in the bins.

Once the ceramic pieces were all fired in the Raku kiln, the pieces were carefully moved into the bins and covered.

After sitting for quite sometime in the bins, the pieces were again carefully removed and placed on the grass where friends poured cold water to stop the firing process. The Owls thought this was super neat! They enjoyed listening to the sound of the cold water splashing onto the very hot pieces, and watching the smoke rise.

We cannot wait to see our finished Raku owls! Ask your Owl what they enjoyed most about the Raku firing.
