Over the last few days the, Owls have been having many discussions about the height of themselves and objects around our room. Yesterday after rest time, friends built a "long line" out of unifix cubes and asked their friends to lay down, so they could see how tall they were. Friends were very excited and could be heard screaming with excitement "LOOK!! I am as tall as the blue cube!" or "How many cubes tall are you?" After all the Owls and teachers were measured, friends tried measuring items around our classroom, but this was extra tricky because their unifix cubes kept breaking apart which made it really hard to measure things!
So this morning during Morning Meeting, friends had a talk about how we could solve the problem of our unfix cube stick to stop breaking, so we could measure things. Some friends thought that we could try gluing or taping the stick together, so it does not break, but others thought that was not a good idea because we would not be able to build anything else if we used glue! So friends put their thinking caps on and thought really hard. Then someone said we could use a RULER! All the Owls agreed that this was an "OWL-tastic" idea!
So Danielle and Samantha went into our Math Center and took out our rulers for friends to explore. Danielle asked friends "Why do you think people would use rulers?" Some friends said to measure how tall you are, others said to see if something is taller or smaller, and others said that people use it when they are building. But then friends noticed there were numbers on their ruler and that it stopped counting at 12! Then, another friend yelled out with excitement "Those are inches!" Danielle explained that the inches are like the different cubes that they were using and that if you have 12 inches, its called a foot! Friends thought that it was extra silly and gross that it is called a foot! The Owls all agreed that it is easier to use the ruler because it could not break apart! But they also think that the inches should be called toes instead of inches!
Friends decided to put their new math tool to the test! Danielle grabbed a book from the bookshelf to see how tall it was. She explained to friends that you find the end of the ruler that has the number 1 and place it at the bottom of your item. Next, you follow the ruler all the way up to the top of the book and STOP! Lastly, you look at the number that it ends at and that is how many inches the book is! Friends found this to be very OWL-some and found it very silly that we have many books that were 11 inches long!
Another friend asked what we would use if we wanted to measure something really big like an elephant. All the Owls agreed that it would take like "a google" amount of rulers and inches to measure an elephant! So Danielle and Samantha explained to friends that there are many different size rulers that they could use. Some are called yard sticks or measuring tapes which are just many rulers put together!
Next, friends all went and grabbed an item that they wanted to try measuring! Some friends grabbed our play people; others grabbed their lovies, and some friends measured books and markers.
Friends were very excited about our new skill that they asked to go around school to measure things! So we did just that! We buddied up and grabbed our measuring tapes and headed off to put our new math skill to the test! Friends measured many items such as benches, trash cans, carpets, bricks, guitars and even Rich's feet!
After we "Ruled" the school, we headed back to our room for Choice Time! Ask your Owl if they remember how many inches are in one foot!
