3D Printing: Flower Pots

As an extension to our Flower Study, the Owls created and printed the flower they chose to study using the 3D printer in our Makerspace. The Makerspace provides the students an additional opportunity to explore their flower through the many different aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics).
Over the pass few weeks, the Owls have been researching a flower of their choice. After learning the Science behind how and where their particular flower grows. The Owls headed to the Makerspace where they could “grow” their own using the technology of our 3D printer.

The students began the 3D printing process by selecting the flowerpot they would like their flower to “bloom” in. The Owls were able to choose from a variety of flowerpot templates. After their flowerpot was selected, the students downloaded the file to the program called CURE. Here and along with a ruler, the students choose the height and width of the pot they would like to print. After their pot was measured to their liking, they programmed the temperature of the printer to 210 degrees for filament and 60 degrees for the bed and hit print!

While their flowerpot was printing, the Owls incorporated the “A” into STEAM. Each Owl received a picture of their chosen flower. After discussing the different aspects of their flower, the Owls used an application on the classroom iPad called Morphi where they replicated their image by sketching their flower. The students added many details, making sure their drawing best represented their flower’s true shape.
Finally, it was time for their flower to “bloom”! The Owls reprogrammed the temperature of the 3D printer and hit print! The Owls watched on with great excitement as their flower began to take shape.

This project was one of the highlights of the year because it allowed the students to incorporate the many different aspects of STEAM learning. We hope you truly enjoy our 3D flower garden.
