Shapes, shapes and MORE SHAPES!

Today, the Owls had Math Workshop. Our focus for this workshop was two-dimensional geometric shapes. Friends examined the different attributes of a square, circle, rectangle, triangle and a rhombus. Here are some of the attributes that the Owls discussed.

Circles
"Circles are round and have no ends."
"You use a circle to draw a head, eyes and some glasses"
"If you stretch it out it turns into an Oval!"
"It has curves"
"It can roll and never stop unless it crashes!"

Squares
"A square has points."
"It has four sides."
"If you flip it over it turns into a diamond!"
"You use lines to draw it."
"Squares have four corners."
"All the sides are the same."

Triangle
"It has 3 lines."
"It's very pointy!"
"The lines goes diagonal."
"It could have 2 short sides and 1 long side"
"If you put 2 triangles together it makes a rhombus!"
"It has 3 sides"

Rectangles
"Has four corners"
"Four sides"
"It has 2 long sides and 2 short sides"
"You use lines to draw it"

Rhombus
"Has four pointy sides"
"Four corners"
"All the sides are diagonal"
"If you turn it sideways it becomes a square!"

Next, Danielle hid the shapes under a scarf and when she moved the scarf friends had to decide what shape was missing. Friends loved the challenge of guessing which shape was hiding!

After our workshop friends headed off for Choice Time. Friends were able to choose between drawing, magnatiles, Dramatic Play and building a shape person using the stamps.

The Owls wrapped up their morning by having a dance party/ shape party. Danielle and Samantha made a HUGE a square, circle, rectangle, triangle and rhombus on the floor using tape. Friends were asked to dance and when the music stopped friends had to freeze and listen to what shape Danielle or Samantha called out, then they needed to dance their way over to the shape! The Owls were so good at this so Danielle and Samantha started to call out the attributes to try and trick them but friends are just to smart!

Ask your Owl if the remember the two math terms they learned today!
