Over the last week, the Owls have been having an ongoing conversation about colors. Last week friends learned that red, blue and yellow are Primary Colors and what it means to be a Primary Color. Friends spent the week pointing out all the red, blue and yellow items in our classroom. As an extension of our color study, friends are focusing on the Secondary Colors this week. Friends learned that Secondary colors are made by taking two Primary Colors and mixing them together. This sparked a lot of questions in the Owls' room with the biggest question being, "What colors can we make?" So we decided to put this to the test!
Friends began their experiment by collecting our materials. We need 6 clear cups, blue, red and yellow watercolor and 6 white paper towels.
Once we collected our materials friends filled every other cup halfway with water. Then we added blue watercolor to the first water filled cup, then yellow to the second cup of water then red to last cup filled with water.
After we filled the 3 cups with our Primary colors, we formed them into a circle making sure an empty cup was between each filled cup. Next, friends added a folded paper towel making sure that one half of the towel was touching the bottom of watercolor cup and the other half was touching the bottom of the empty cup. Friends repeated this step until all the cups were linked with the cup next to it.
Once all the cups were linked, magic started to happen. Friends observed that the color was being "sucked up like a vacuum" onto the paper towel, and it was changing colors.
While our experiment was "working its magic" friends went off to explore with colors during Choice Time.
One of the choices friends were able to choose from was the light table. The Owls explored mixing colors with light and transparent color swatches. Friends were very excited and could be heard cheering with joy "LOOK! Blue and red make purple!"
Friends took a quick break from color mixing and headed off to music class with Keisha. The Owls continued to explore their Classical Indian Music Study with Keisha as well participating in a full body movement song about ponies!
After Music Class, friends headed back to check on our Color Experiment. The Owls were beyond excited when they saw that the paper towels were now a completely different color, and the empty cups were filled with new colors! Friends decided to let our experiment sit a little longer to see if more would happen! So friends grabbed our coats and headed outside to explore our outdoor classroom.
After our run around, friends came back in and noticed even more happened to our cups of water. ALL the cups were now full, and all the cups were different colors! There was a blue, purple, red, orange, yellow, and green cup! Ask your Owl if they remember how we got a purple, orange and green cup!
Friends wrapped up their morning by heading off to lunch. During lunch friends talked about our experiment and discussed items in their lunch and if they were primary or secondary colors.
