The Owl's morning started off in Spanish class with Alicia. Friends hopped on their planes and headed off for an adventure in Venezuela. Once friends landed, Alicia read a story called "Margaret and Margarita." Ask your Owl if they remember what language the girls spoke. After the story Alicia asked friends what their favorite thing was. Friends answered by saying "Me gusta ....." After everyone got a turn, we said "Adios" to Alicia and headed back to our room.
When we got back to our classroom, friends met for Morning Meeting. During Morning Meeting, we calculated the results from our Flubber Pole to see what color we were going to make our flubber. Friends noticed that their were fewer but equal amount of votes for both the blue and orange, which ruled those colors out. Second place was green with three votes which is one more vote than the orange and blue. But the purple was the winner with the most votes at 6! Once all of our tallies were in, we set off to make our magical flubber!
The first thing friends did before starting was to read over the flubber recipe and gather their materials. We needed ...
2 LARGE bowls
2 Spoons
3/4 cup of cold water
Liquid Watercolor
1 cup of glue
1/2 cup of hot water
1 teaspoon of Borax
After our materials were all gathered, we placed the cold water, glue and purple watercolor in a bowl and mixed it all up until everything was combined. In our second bowl, we combined the hot water and borax and mixed it together until all the Borax dissolved. After everything was combined in both bowls, friends talked about what both bowls looked like. Friends decided that they both were liquids and that one was purple and the other was clear. Once all of our observations were finished, we began the final step in the process which was the most exciting and magical step! Slowly we combined the hot water and Borax bowl into the other bowl. Friends were amazed at what was happening, both of the liquids were beginning to form a "gooey solid." Ask your Owl if they remember what caused the flubber to go from a liquid to a solid.
After our experiment, we headed off to Choice Time where friends were able to explore our flubber,
draw using our stencils (this is super tricky for some friends because you have to use both of your hands),
and play with our barn house.
Friends wrapped our morning by listening/watching the story on our overhead projector. Samantha read the story of "The Three Bears" while Danielle used objects around the room to recreate the scene on the projector. This was such a hit that the Owls invited their friends, the Catbirds, over to recreate the book "The Three Little Pigs"!
The Owls finished up their morning by having a picnic for lunch. So we pushed all of the tables to the side and rolled out our "picnic blanket" and had lunch on the floor. During lunch, friends talked about what they would bring if we had a "real" picnic. Here will be our menu when we do have one...
Sandwiches
Strawberries
Turkey Burgers
Pizza
Blueberries
More Sandwiches
Hot Dogs
Tomatoes
Apples
Some more Strawberries
Sun butter ("but we would pretend it was peanut butter")
Ice Cream
Popsicles
After lunch we headed off to rest to dream about our picnic plans!
