Celebrating Diwali

Today, Shiv’s mom Subha came in to talk to the Owls about Diwali, the Hindu Holiday also known as the Festival of Lights. Subha told friends that Diwali is being celebrated this year on November 11, but it changes every year because they follow the Lunar calendar.  Friends learned that the Lunar calendar is based on the moon! Subha also told friends that during the celebrations diyas or candles are lit to help the Goddess Lakshmi find her way to homes to bless them. During this time, they celebrate by dancing to Hindu songs, eating lots of delicious foods and setting off fireworks. Ask your Owl if they remember what holiday is similar to Diwali. Friends also learned about Rangoli patterns and how, in India, people create these large elaborate, colorful designs out of colored powder or rice. During Choice Time, friends were able to color their own Rangoli patterns. We finished up our visit by learning a celebratory dance where friends moved in a circle to the right and clapped three times to each side (low, middle and high). Friends are very excited for Subha to come back and to talk to us more about Diwali and to continue our celebrations!
