Today the Owls had a Literacy Workshop. The main focus of our workshop was letter formation and letter sounds. Over the last few weeks, friends have been learning how to write and sound out the letters L, F, E, T, I and H. Friends participated in four different centers that helped practice our new skills.
The first center was the magna doodles. Friends were asked to practice writing their letters by using the Handwriting Without Tears Shapes (Big Line, Little Line, Big Curve Little Curve). The Owls thought this center was a "little tricky" because the magna doodle pencil was very small which put the Owls fine motor skills to the test!
Our second center was play dough. Friends were asked to try to form the letters by using the play dough. This activity is not only good for learning the letters, but it also helps friends develop their fine motor skills!
The third center was not only a letter recognition activity but also a sensory one as well! Friends were asked to go on a letter hunt by fishing through a bin of beans to find all the letters of the alphabet. Friends found this activity to be silly because sometimes the beans would get stuck to the letters and fall on the floor!
The last center helped friends develop their letter sounds and gross motor skills. Friends were asked to find items around the classroom that began with the letters L, F, E, T, I and H. Friends found this activity to be lots of fun, but friends all agreed that we need to get more "E" things in our classroom!
Here is a list of all of our items that we found!
L
lemon, ladder, log, lamb, lovey, lunch box
F
frog, fish, firefighter
E
elephant
T
tiger, tape, tissue, turtles, tortuous, triangle, trains, tracks, truck, towel, table, telescope, trash can
H
hat, hearts, house, horse
Ask your Owl what center they "OWL-joyed" the most!
