Letters and Books

The Owls started their morning off with Meeting for Worship in the Music Room. Friends are working very hard on having Moments of Silence. Friends were asked to think about the "light" that everyone has and how it makes you feel when you let it shine! After Meeting for Worship, friends headed back to their room for Morning Meeting. Friends were very excited when they learned that a new activity was added to our Daily Schedule! (Literacy Workshop)

Yesterday, friends learned which hand was their left hand and which was their right hand. Knowing which hand is which will be very helpful when friends start to learn how to write their letters.  Friends practiced their new skill by singing a song and shaking their right hand with one another. After our song and our hellos, friends met back on the rug for Literacy Workshop.

The focus of our workshop was handwriting. The program we use is called Handwriting Without Tears. This programs uses a hands-on approach using manipulatives and songs to learn the letters of the alphabet.

Our workshop began with Danielle and Samantha explaining to friends that there are four different shapes that one would use when drawing a letter: a BIG Curve, a little Curve, a BIG line and a little line. Each Owl received a wooden manipulative of a BIG curve, a little curve, a BIG line and a little line. Then they listened to another song that helped them easily identify the different line and curves. Friends enjoyed the song because it was the Hokey Pokey.

Friends wrapped up our workshop by seeing if they could form any letters using the Big Curve, Little Curve, Big Line and Little Line.  Friends could be heard screaming with excitement "I MADE A D!" and "LOOK! I MADE A J!" Ask your Owl if they remember what two shapes we use when forming a letter!

After Literacy Workshop, friends headed off to Choice Time. Friends were able to choose between the Dramatic Play Area, Magnatiles, Doll House, Sandbox and Observational Drawings.  Last week friends made a list of their favorite books. Today during Choice, friends were asked to do an Observational Drawing of their favorite book's cover. Friends did such a "OWL-tastic" job with their drawings that it was really hard for Danielle and Samantha to tell which was the drawing and which was the book!  Can you guess what book your Owl chose?

Friends finished up their jam packed morning by going outside to enjoy the beautiful weather!
